Gissings Farm - where William Barber b 1783 grew up, as one of 12 children of Robert Barber and Sarah Stanford. Robert was a tenant farmer here, a farm of the Whittingham Hall estate. His brother, James, was tenant farmer and resident at nearby Whittingham Hall, the main residence of the estate.

December 1790 survey and new rent adjustments, re: Whittingham Hall Estate, undertaken for Sir Charles Bunbury by a Mr. Josselyn, of which Gissings Farm is noted: -

1. Whittingham Hall Tenant James Barber - rent 145 pounds (new rent 185 pounds). House tiled

2. Olivedale, let to James Barber - rent 60 pounds (new rent 65 pounds). Thatched, clay walls

3. Gissings Farm, Robert Barber - rent 90 pounds (new rent 112 pounds) Josselyn notes: 'I should be fearful this man may want property or may be low in circumstances. Has a sick wife and 10 young children, all boys. I am fearful the advance may alarm him but am certain that the farm is well worth the money.'

4. Smith's, Dry Docking, James Barber - rent 20 pounds. Let with Whittingham Hall

Following, is reference when the farm was being sold, at: FRESSINGFIELD LITTLE WHITTINGHAM GREEN - TM 27 NE 6/37 Gissings Farmhouse; 29.7.55 -- II; Listing NGR: TM2903977242

Farmhouse. Late C16/early C17, probably in 2 phases, forming a single long range. C19 alterations. Timber framed, with a C19 white brick facade with 3 pilaster strips; whitewashed brick to right gable end, the remainder plastered. Roof of mid C20 plaintiles. 2 storeys and attic. 4 windows, mullion and transom casements, probably of C19 date; flat brick arches. Lobby entrance with C19 6-panel raised and fielded door, the upper 2 panels glazed.

One small segmental-headed dormer. A heavy internal stack over the doorway and a small stack between the hall and service rooms. At the rear there are 2 incomplete original windows with ovolo-moulded frames, one with the remains of mullions; another window, which seems to be secondary, has chamfered mullions.

Inside the house most of the timbers are concealed. An original ovolo-moulded external doorway survives in the rear wall.
