Moon Family

Esther Green was the daughter of James Green (b. 1797) and Sarah Ward. She was born in Kirkbymoorside Parish (probably on Rudland Rigg), in 1835 (christened 25 August, 1835, Kirkbymoorside, North Riding of Yorkshire).

When she was 18 she had her son, James Green (b. 1853) by a man who last name was Moon. (James Green once told his son, George Green: "You know, your name might have been 'Moon.'")

Esther Green may have been working for the Moon family, perhaps at Cowl House or just north, at the time when she became pregnant. William Moon, who lived at Cornforth just north of Cowl House, had built a Methodist chapel there, across the lane in West Bransdale. Though the exact Moon (father of James Green remains unknown), it is probable that William Moon was the grandfather of James Green, son of Esther.

James Green spoke of working for Sir George (perhaps the 'Sir' was in jest or respect), and it may have been George Moon, who may have been in fact his father.
