James John Austin

James John Austin was born, 7 July 1853, at 49 Bell Street, Lisson Grove, Registration District of Marylebone (London, UK) - but just steps from Paddington Green, and St. Mary's church (see Marylebone maps).

James John Austin Birth Certificate

He was a tobacconist, working with 'Lambert and Butler' at their Oxford Street factory. He died in the Infirmary at Bishop Stortford, Hertfordshire in 1915. The Census of 1911 showed him and wife Monica as living at St. Alban's, Hertfordshire. At the time of his death, they were residing in Braughing. I have the particulars relating to his death and burial in the Braughing parish church. I don't know they had removed to Hertfordshire, from Tottenham and Edmonton in north London. I suspect that he may have been inflicted with the lung disease that killed him and that he was moving farther from the city to try and get better air quality.

James was the son of James Aitkin (alias Attkin or Atkin) Austin and Mary Maria Scarfe. He married Monica Kelly (born ca 1855, parish of St. Martin in the Fields, London) on 26th April, 1874 at the Parish Church of Islington, Middlesex County (London). On the marriage certificate, the father of James is noted as James Atkin Austin, blacksmith and the father of Monica is listed as James Kelly, tailor.

At the time of their wedding in the parish of Islington, 26th April, James John Austin's address is 14 Half Moon Crescent. He was a tobacco manufacterer - bachelor, of age; and Monica Kelly - address 10 Grove Road (see Marylebone maps) - spinster, a minor. The names of the witnesses appear to be: John Chipp and Caroline Bute.

In the 1881 Census James John Austin was listed as 'head,' tobacco cutter, age 27, residing at 101 Usk Road, Battersea, Surrey (Greater London). In the 1901 Census, he is residing in the Civil Parish of Tottenham.

A Barnardo-connection document lists him, in 1907, as living at 8 Bertram Road in Enfield (Greater London). This is St. Andrew's parish. The Municipal Ward was Gren Street and Ponders End, in the 'municipal borough' of Enfield. The Frank King family was living with them (Frank was unemployed at the time.), and thus James was unable to give additional support to his daughter-in-law, Florence Dartnell, who had been abandoned by her husband (James' son), Charles Austin.
